Almost 70% of the world’s cocoa comes from Africa, but less than 1% of the world’s chocolate is made there. Our mission is to make chocolate entirely in Madagascar. This reverses some trends that have long held back economic growth in Madagascar, or across Africa for that matter.
Making chocolate at origin is not easy. But we’re convinced it’s the right thing to do – for the industry, for cocoa farmers, and for those of us who love to eat chocolate.
To date we’ve made over 4 million bars from start to finish in Madagascar. 100% of our chocolate was made at origin from 2008 – 2014. Then in 2015 we started to make some chocolate outside of Madagascar while we made investments into our supply chain. Today, we are continuing our work to have production back up and running in Madagascar. In 2018, we completed our first production run with our new manufacturing partner and are excited to continue that progress in 2019. It has not been easy, but it has definitely been worth it.
